He estado trabajando con nuestros l\u00edderes en el Equipo Organizador de Comunicaciones para aclarar sus\u00a0inter\u00e9s propio<\/a>\u2013\u00bfQu\u00e9 hay para ellos?\u2013 en la lucha para transformar nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica con fines de lucro. En las capacitaciones y reuniones de equipo, ha surgido un problema com\u00fan: a muchos de nosotros nos han ense\u00f1ado a concentrarnos en los privilegios y ventajas que tenemos en relaci\u00f3n con el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica. Intencionalmente o no, muchos de nosotros no reconocemos que, en primer lugar, la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica en Estados Unidos nunca estuvo destinada a funcionar para nosotros. Cuando algunos de nosotros nos concentramos en las formas en que sufrimos menos que otros, debilitamos nuestro poder para luchar por una sociedad que funcione para todos nosotros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una l\u00edder, Erica, dijo que est\u00e1 agradecida de tener finalmente un seguro porque su nuevo trabajo brinda cobertura m\u00e9dica. Otra l\u00edder, Anna, expres\u00f3 que, como persona blanca, no hab\u00eda tenido muchas experiencias abiertamente negativas con el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, aunque no hab\u00eda tenido proveedores que compartieran sus identidades. Otro l\u00edder comparti\u00f3 que aunque su familia emigr\u00f3 de M\u00e9xico, su privilegio econ\u00f3mico lo hab\u00eda protegido, y tal vez eso signifique que su experiencia no fue lo suficientemente dura como para luchar por un mejor sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estos l\u00edderes no est\u00e1n solos. He sentido lo mismo, tanto en relaci\u00f3n con la identificaci\u00f3n de mi propio inter\u00e9s en cambiar el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica como en la lucha por una sociedad mejor en su conjunto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un soborno creado para dividir<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

En mis primeros a\u00f1os aprendiendo sobre el antirracismo, se enfatiz\u00f3 el privilegio de los blancos como una de las piezas clave que los blancos como yo deben comprender: que tengo ventajas inmerecidas debido a mi raza. Esto me ayud\u00f3 a ver c\u00f3mo act\u00fao y defiendo el racismo, c\u00f3mo opera de manera m\u00e1s amplia y las formas reales en que mi vida ha sido m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil porque soy blanca. Pero pasaron varios a\u00f1os antes de que supiera que se otorgaban privilegios a los blancos como una medida estrat\u00e9gica para pacificarlos y debilitar nuestro poder para luchar juntos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le\u00ed sobre la historia racial de Estados Unidos en el siglo XVII, cuando los blancos de \u00e9lite de las colonias del sur eran superados en n\u00famero por los pueblos africanos e ind\u00edgenas esclavizados. Las \u00e9lites blancas ricas tem\u00edan que los europeos pobres se dieran cuenta de que ten\u00edan m\u00e1s en com\u00fan con los intereses de los negros esclavizados y que construyeran unidad y poder para levantarse y poner fin al sistema de explotaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica. Los blancos de \u00e9lite sab\u00edan que necesitaban dividir a estos grupos para debilitar su poder, de lo contrario perder\u00edan el control y ya no podr\u00edan explotarlos como mano de obra gratuita para acumular cantidades masivas de riqueza. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mientras le\u00eda sobre esta historia, recuerdo una frase en particular que se me qued\u00f3 grabada: \u201csoborno racial\u201d. La estrategia de los blancos de \u00e9lite era otorgar a los sirvientes blancos contratados derechos y privilegios limitados (la capacidad de poseer tierras y armas) para que comenzaran a verse a s\u00ed mismos como superiores a los negros y m\u00e1s alineados con la blancura. De repente, en comparaci\u00f3n, sus condiciones no parec\u00edan tan malas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

El soborno funcion\u00f3. Los blancos pobres empezaron a centrarse en lo que ten\u00edan (m\u00e1s derechos que los negros) y aceptaron su situaci\u00f3n en lugar de centrarse en sus condiciones econ\u00f3micas. El \u201csoborno racial\u201d \u2013proporcionar algunos privilegios simb\u00f3licos a los blancos para pacificarlos\u2013 sigue influyendo en la forma en que los blancos se ven a s\u00ed mismos como si no sufrieran lo suficiente como para defenderse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No dispuesta a guardar silencio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Antes de trabajar en Center for Health Progress, no pod\u00eda ver las formas en que nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica con fines de lucro me perjudica. Tuve un enorme gasto de bolsillo de $5,000 cuando naci\u00f3 mi primer hijo; Ped\u00ed prestados $2,000 a mis padres para atenci\u00f3n dental cr\u00edtica; La falta de atenci\u00f3n de la vista provoc\u00f3 un retraso en el diagn\u00f3stico y da\u00f1o a los nervios de un ojo. Sin embargo, como puedo acceder a un seguro m\u00e9dico si puedo pagarlo y no enfrento el racismo en el m\u00e9dico, pens\u00e9 que deber\u00eda estar agradecido por lo que tengo, porque algunas personas lo pasan peor. Cre\u00ed que deb\u00eda guardar silencio y aceptar lo que pudiera conseguir. En realidad, estaba luchando y merec\u00eda algo mejor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cientos de a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la creaci\u00f3n de la blancura en Estados Unidos, el 1% (los blancos de \u00e9lite que est\u00e1n acumulando enormes cantidades de riqueza a nuestras espaldas) todav\u00eda conf\u00edan en que no veamos nuestras luchas compartidas. Cuentan conmigo, como persona blanca, para seguir centr\u00e1ndome en el sufrimiento de los dem\u00e1s en lugar de reconocer mi propio inter\u00e9s en esta lucha. Crear una jerarqu\u00eda del sufrimiento no mejora el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica para nadie. Debemos construir poder colectivo para un sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que valore nuestra humanidad y bienestar.
