The first time my dad attempted suicide, I was shocked, devastated, deeply saddened, and angry. When it happened again, I felt confused.
Throughout my life, I’ve belonged to many organizations and clubs—from soccer teams to school clubs, trade associations, and national advocacy organizations. These experiences have provided lessons around how “membership” can be completely different depending on the group context, norms, policies, and practices.
Recently, I’ve taken a deeper look at my familial history and examined not only the interesting stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, but also the laws, policies, and current affairs that would have directly impacted my ancestors during their lives.
This year my goal list looks like it does most years—exercise daily, dedicate more time to playing the guitar, and read a book a month. But this year I’ve added a new goal: commit to giving gratitude more frequently.
We spent the better part of 2017 doing a deep dive into goal setting as part of our strategic planning. The result is our 2018-2020 Strategic Framework.
