2021 was a big year for health equity in Colorado. With your help, we passed powerful legislation to improve all of our lives. Read our 2021 Legislative Session Summary to learn more. Here are the six bills we prioritized, all of which passed and have been signed into law:
A NEW HEALTH INSURANCE OPTION
The Colorado Option is a new health insurance plan that will cost less and cover more! This is a big win for Black and brown communities who have been priced out of health insurance for too long.
REMOVING BARRIERS TO PUBLIC PROGRAMS
Back in 2006, two bills passed that required government employees to discriminate against immigrants without
documentation. This year we repealed those bills so we can all access the services and resources we’re eligible for.
HOSPITAL BILLING REFORM
Medical debt is a huge challenge, especially for communities of color. By standardizing financial assistance screening at hospitals and setting limits on what debts they can turn over to collections, patients are better protected.
LEGAL DEFENSE FUND FOR IMMIGRANTS
Immigration court is the only legal proceeding in the US where someone doesn’t have a right to an attorney if they cannot afford one. This bill creates a fund for the defense of immigrants in legal proceedings, which is a major win!
PROTECTING COLORADANS’ DATA
We all deserve to have our personal data protected from improper use by state employees. This bill will protect us from having our information shared with ICE and other agencies unless the proper legal process has been followed.
INCREASING ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION
Access to contraception is critical for the health and long-term wellbeing of Coloradans. By adding contraception to Medicaid, now immigrants will be able to access more of the reproductive health care they need!
