Si bien esto me hizo muy humilde, me impidi\u00f3 criticar muchos de los sistemas en Estados Unidos, incluso cuando no funcionaron para m\u00ed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qued\u00e9 sin seguro a la edad de 18 a\u00f1os cuando perd\u00ed la cobertura pedi\u00e1trica a trav\u00e9s del estado y mis padres no pod\u00edan permitirse agregarme al plan de seguro de su empleador. Florida, el estado en el que viv\u00eda, no ten\u00eda un programa ampliado de Medicaid y, aunque ten\u00eda bajos ingresos, no era elegible en ese momento debido al l\u00edmite de ingresos en mi estado. Durante mi experiencia sin seguro, luch\u00e9 por encontrar acceso asequible a atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica y no exist\u00eda atenci\u00f3n de calidad sin costo. Me enferm\u00e9 gravemente con un trastorno de dolor cr\u00f3nico y ten\u00eda opciones de atenci\u00f3n muy limitadas. Manejar una enfermedad cr\u00f3nica sin continuidad de la atenci\u00f3n y dependiendo de proveedores de escala m\u00f3vil fue muy dif\u00edcil. Llevar\u00eda una carpeta con mi historial m\u00e9dico para evitar servicios redundantes y pagar\u00eda de mi bolsillo cuando pudiera. No fue hasta los 24 que consegu\u00ed un empleo y finalmente obtuve acceso a atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica asequible. Tuve que esperar seis a\u00f1os para poder acceder a una necesidad b\u00e1sica: seis largos a\u00f1os gestion\u00e1ndome lo mejor que pude sin un plan de tratamiento.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Esta experiencia me abri\u00f3 los ojos a las formas en que nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica le est\u00e1 fallando a la gente, pero sent\u00ed que no pod\u00eda compartir mis frustraciones con quienes me rodean. Me enoj\u00f3 no poder expresar lo que realmente sent\u00eda porque crec\u00ed escuchando declaraciones como \u201cal menos tenemos atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica de buena calidad\u201d y \u201cal menos tienes acceso a los medicamentos\u201d.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me qued\u00e9 pregunt\u00e1ndome, \"\u00bfpero lo hacemos?\" Como estadounidense nacido en este pa\u00eds, pas\u00e9 seis a\u00f1os sin hacerme un chequeo dental y lidiar con un trastorno de dolor cr\u00f3nico no controlado a menudo me imped\u00eda ir al trabajo o a la escuela. Las percepciones de mi familia sobre las grandes oportunidades en Estados Unidos me suponen una carga. Sent\u00ed que para respetar a mi familia y las luchas que soportaron para buscar estabilidad y nuevas oportunidades, no pod\u00eda esperar nada m\u00e1s de nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las frustraciones que sent\u00ed mientras no ten\u00eda seguro y la naturaleza restrictiva del seguro m\u00e9dico vinculado a mi empleo se convirtieron en combustible para mi fuego y me motivaron a realizar mi Maestr\u00eda en Salud P\u00fablica en la Universidad de Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En septiembre de 2022, comenc\u00e9 a trabajar con el Center for Health Progress como pasante de pol\u00edticas. Mi enfoque principal fue movilizar el alcance comunitario para el programa OmniSalud, una opci\u00f3n de seguro m\u00e9dico asequible para personas indocumentadas y aquellas con estatus de Acci\u00f3n Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) en Colorado. OmniSalud es el resultado de la aprobaci\u00f3n de la SB20-215, un proyecto de ley que cre\u00f3 una fuente de financiamiento para los habitantes de Colorado que no son elegibles para las opciones de seguro m\u00e9dico de la Ley de Cuidado de Salud a Bajo Precio (ACA) y la HB21-1232, tambi\u00e9n conocida como la Opci\u00f3n de Colorado.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilit\u00e9 la capacitaci\u00f3n para el personal del Center for Health Progress, nuestros l\u00edderes comunitarios, m\u00e9dicos y personal de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica aliado. Aunque tengo experiencia en educaci\u00f3n sanitaria, no me sent\u00ed preparado para desglosar la informaci\u00f3n de una manera que fuera f\u00e1cil de entender. Varios miembros del personal y yo hablamos sobre c\u00f3mo incluso la terminolog\u00eda m\u00e1s b\u00e1sica sobre seguros m\u00e9dicos era inaccesible para una gran parte de nuestra poblaci\u00f3n que no hablaba ingl\u00e9s y lo injusto que era que cre\u00e1ramos un sistema que dificultaba la comprensi\u00f3n de estos t\u00e9rminos. \u00bfC\u00f3mo terminamos con un sistema que era tan confuso que incluso aquellos \u201cde adentro\u201d tendr\u00edan dificultades para ayudar a otros a entenderlo? \u00bfTen\u00eda que ser as\u00ed? \u00bfC\u00f3mo podr\u00eda hacer que este sistema funcione para todos?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mientras trabajaba con miembros de la comunidad para comprender OmniSalud, comenc\u00e9 a notar cada vez m\u00e1s fallas en nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica. Aunque esto ampliar\u00eda el acceso a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica para 10.000 personas, me preocupaba que estas personas carecieran de las herramientas para navegar el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica con sus nuevos planes de seguro. Tambi\u00e9n exist\u00edan temores persistentes de discriminaci\u00f3n por parte de los proveedores y dudas sobre si los inscritos tendr\u00edan proveedores que aceptar\u00edan su nuevo seguro. Otro problema fue que hab\u00eda un l\u00edmite de inscripci\u00f3n de s\u00f3lo 10.000 personas y ese umbral se alcanz\u00f3 en menos de un mes. Se estim\u00f3 que 33.000 habitantes de Colorado habr\u00edan sido elegibles para este programa y con s\u00f3lo 10.000 lugares, todav\u00eda dejaba una enorme brecha en el acceso. Me preocupaba que estos desaf\u00edos no pudieran abordarse s\u00f3lo con mis esfuerzos. Se trataba de una cuesti\u00f3n sist\u00e9mica que deb\u00eda cambiar si realmente quer\u00edamos lograr un mayor acceso a una atenci\u00f3n sanitaria de calidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M\u00e1s que unas pocas migajas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>En mi trabajo con el personal del Center for Health Progress y en espacios de promoci\u00f3n de pol\u00edticas, segu\u00eda escuchando el sentimiento: \"queremos m\u00e1s que migajas, queremos el pastel completo\". Esto era esencialmente lo contrario de lo que me hab\u00edan dicho mis padres, quienes estaban demasiado asustados para pedir m\u00e1s de las migajas que recibimos. Pero reson\u00f3 en m\u00ed y me envi\u00f3 a una reflexi\u00f3n personal sobre las experiencias y los sue\u00f1os de mi familia, la narrativa que me hab\u00edan vendido cuando era ni\u00f1o y lo que creo sobre la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica como un derecho humano.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me qued\u00e9 pregunt\u00e1ndome si tuviera que luchar por todo el pastel y no solo por unas pocas migajas, \u00bfparecer\u00eda un desagradecido por las cosas por las que mi familia trabaj\u00f3 tan duro para lograr? Soy el sue\u00f1o americano de mi familia, \u00bfqu\u00e9 m\u00e1s puedo pedir?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mientras luchaba con estas preguntas, asist\u00ed a la capacitaci\u00f3n sobre Poder del Center for Health Progress, la primera capacitaci\u00f3n de una serie que equipa a nuestros l\u00edderes para construir poder colectivo para luchar por un sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que valore nuestra humanidad y bienestar por encima de las ganancias. A medida que aprendimos sobre los temores comunes que impiden que las personas accedan a su propio poder, me di cuenta de que tem\u00eda que mi privilegio (como latina blanca, documentada y nacida en Estados Unidos) me hiciera no calificada para hablar sobre las luchas de los habitantes negros o morenos de Colorado. que son indocumentados.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Una mayor reflexi\u00f3n me ayud\u00f3 a darme cuenta de que si permit\u00eda que el miedo me detuviera, estar\u00eda participando en un sistema que busca dividirnos por raza y clase, con la esperanza de que no construyamos poder juntos para luchar por lo que todos merecemos. El trabajo que he realizado durante los \u00faltimos meses me ha ayudado a comprender que tengo un lugar en esta lucha y que todos lo tenemos. Deber\u00eda asumir mi poder como estadounidense de primera generaci\u00f3n y luchar por los derechos humanos b\u00e1sicos para m\u00ed y para los dem\u00e1s, incluidos los que no tienen documentaci\u00f3n. Me di cuenta de que parte del sue\u00f1o americano es vivir en un pa\u00eds donde tus necesidades b\u00e1sicas est\u00e9n cubiertas sin temor a perder tu casa, tus ahorros o incluso tu vida. Estoy decidido a generar poder colectivo para transformar nuestro sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica con fines de lucro porque merecemos algo m\u00e1s que las migajas.
