Center for Health Progress is proud to endorse The Campaign for a Healthy Colorado’s initiative to increase tobacco tax. Amendment 72, a 2016 ballot measure, will benefit Colorado communities by reducing smoking and related health care costs, improving care for youth and veterans, and propelling cutting-edge research to cure cancer and other major diseases.
Center for Health Progress works to create opportunities and eliminate barriers to health equity for Coloradans. In alignment with this mission, we support public policy that allows all Coloradans to access quality health care services that meet their needs, improves population health outcomes while reducing costs, and advances health equity. Amendment 72 contributes directly to these desired outcomes.
The increase in prices of tobacco products decreases tobacco-using behaviors, which improves the health of Coloradans. Additionally, the revenues raised from the taxes will be distributed to some of our most vulnerable populations, by expanding rural and community health centers, improving and creating mental health programs for children, filling in gaps in underfunded programs for veterans, and making historic investments in cutting-edge research. Amendment 72 is a step toward a healthier future for all Coloradans, and Center for Health Progress is proud to join the Campaign for a Healthy Colorado in support.
